OK, so first: more stuff than storage always equals a mess. So you need to get rid of some stuff, or get more/better storage. Getting rid of stuff is almost always the better choice.

Also, you’re looking at too big of a picture right now, and it’s overwhelming. Start with the chair that has stuff on it. Clear the stuff off. Maybe wipe down/vacuum the chair. Gaze adoringly at your clean chair. Take a break. Then pick one of the boxes. Deal with the contents of the box. Make the box go bye-bye. Smile smugly at where the box used to be.

One thing at a time. If you look at everything all at once, it seems hopeless. Narrow your view a little bit.

  3. cincodenada said: One of the things that is probably obvious, but helpful to me, is to clean out a big box, and then use that as a Goodwill box. As an alternative/addition to a big garbage bag, it can really cut down on the stuff without feeling too guilty about it.
