Terrifying motivation for lazy people with messy homes

I live in a rental house, and our kitchen counter is basically a thin sheet of RUBBER over PLYWOOD. I have no idea what to use for cleaning it, and it is pretty sketchy. I have used a variety of cleaning products, and I never get cleaner than "light brown instead of the REALLY brown that it started with". I think that at that point it is just removing bits of rubber, but who knows?! Any thoughts on cleaning gross rubber counters? Google is no help. (also I created a tumblr account just for this)

I’m having a really hard time picturing this. First things first, though, I’s probably want to sanitize the shit out of it, so a good wipedown with a bleach solution (dilute it well, please!) would be where I’d start. Can you take a picture or find a link of something comparable?
