Hi!So I hoped this hasn’t been asked before but do you or any of your followers have any idea on how to organise the home library? I have books for all different kind of things (school, lit, old children’s books) but no idea on how to organise it so any ideas would be more than welcome :)

(Making this answerable and rebloggable.) Archivists! Librarians! Book enthusiasts! I know you guys have suggestions. What do you think is a good system?

  3. lozartist answered: I organize all my books my series and size. I’ve seen many decorators organize by color, but that would bug me.
  4. its-you-i-cant-lose answered: I usually do a pared down version of the Dewey Decimal system: Organize the category (fiction, non-fiction) then subcategory, then author.
  5. pyleofme answered: It’s all personal preference. I organize by subject, then height. Some like alphabetical. Or by color. Good luck!
  6. seasidehare answered: Fiction: mine, his (alphabetically by author). Non-fiction: mine, his (by genre: computers, linguistics, travel books).
  7. scriptoriana answered: From a official Library Fairy: separate fiction and nonfiction first. The separate nonfiction into like groups. Alphabetized by author
  8. scriptoriana said: Melville Dewey has the answers for you, my friend. Separate adult from children’s. Then fiction from non fiction. Separate nonfiction into like groups (science, lit theory, biography, history). Within groups, alphabetized by authors last name first, then authors first name,…
  9. nogling answered: Take a hint from the not-home library! Subject first, then alphabetical by author, so you can FIND the books you need.
  10. jetage answered: For me, this works: Big categories like school, fiction, non-fiction on seperate shelves. Then author’s name.
  11. scatteringashes answered: The husband manages a book store, and he does at home what he does at work: by genre, and alphabetically by author’s last name.
  12. startledoctopus answered: 1-2 shelves for books to be reread soon, fiction, scifi/fantasy, and nonfiction separated and alphabetized (choose your biggest genres)
  13. notsomolly answered: My genre, and then by author within genre. Do not organize your books by color. It makes you look like a doof.
  14. iseulttoinjury answered: heavy textbooks and reference books on the bottom. kids’ books at kid-height, sorted by size. classic lit together, personal novels together.
  15. littlebluecarrot answered: put not only kids books, but anything your kids might want to read or you want them to read on low shelves where they can easily reach!
  16. wassup-holmes answered: Organize them by subject: fiction (mystery, romance, sci-fi all together) and non-fiction (art, self-help, cooking) then alphabetically
  17. storiesbybrady answered: Mine are arranged by category (reference, novels, poetry, childrens, theatre & travel)
  18. fallintosanity answered: Organize by how you look for things. I keep categories together: fantasy, kids’, nonfiction, trivia, etc; then by author and series.
  19. xogs answered: Plain old alphabetical order. Otherwise it’s too complicated to actually use.

  21. hobbiten answered: Just a few suggestions: topics/genres, date of first publication, colour. Mine is a mix of topics and colour.
  22. prettyshrub answered: Personally I like to organize by topic first.
  23. orchidnecromancer answered: I keep reference on the closest shelf, organized by size and subject and fiction on a different shelf organized by author.
  24. whentroublecomescassius answered: Alphabetical!
  25. pierce-the-heavens answered: The majority of my books are sorted by color :x Rainbow order, then black/grey/white. My favorites have their own shelf sorted by size/series
  26. poemnerd answered: I do by genre and then alphabetically by author’s last name.
  27. michelet answered: Categories that make sense for you! I have nonfiction, fiction, mysteries, poetry, plays, reference, comics, in that order. A-Z by author.
  28. signifierofmalepower answered: 1. Group by category. You’re off to a good start cause you recognize your books belong in different groups. 2. Alphabetical by author
  29. meganbg answered: I organize mine by type… Fiction, reference, biography. Then by author’s last name. Within author, chronologically.
  30. quantumstarlight answered: I do by genre, then size. flic.kr/p/7JP3g…
  31. athousanderrors answered: Mine is like this: large (mainly reference/craft) on bottom shelf. Fiction alpha by author. Children’s together at height kids can reach.
