Terrifying motivation for lazy people with messy homes

In two weeks, I move out of my childhood home for good, in order to join the real world as an unemployed college graduate.  So I figure — before I go, I should set that room to rights, so that my dad can use it as a guest room / repaint it / claim it for his own / whatever the hell he wants to do with it, without having to encounter my mess, my overabundance of clothes and books and DVDs from years and years past, and all the random crap I’ve accumulated since I was five.

Today, I eased into the process by focusing on two big problem areas just for my day-to-day life:  my bed, and my dresser.  My bed, as you can see, tends to be a mess.

bed mad

(The bedding, like the rest of my pink-and-unicorn decorated room, reflects a time when I was much younger, and had much poorer taste; don’t judge, I’m too poor/cheap to buy new bedding for a bed I have only used on breaks from college.)  I clear it off each night before I sleep on it, but then by the end of the day ends up piled with stuff. Not to mention the fact that I am embarrassingly bad about things like making my bed and washing my sheets.

So!  I cleared off my bed, putting all the various things — clothes, hair dryer, etc. — in their proper places.  And I washed my sheets.  And I made my bed (yes, that is what my bed looks like made, I never said I was good at it).

And then I decided to clear off the top of my dresser, which as you can see, is a total mess and has zero organizational system.  Finding cosmetics and toiletries basically involves digging through the heap and hoping to come up with what I’m looking for.

So I went through everything, throwing away what I didn’t need, sorting what I did, and putting into place a system of organization.  In the need to find space for some of the things I didn’t necessarily want to throw out but also didn’t want just sitting on my dresser, I also ended up cleaning out two drawers filled mostly with old, unused clothes, and bagged them for donation.

Tomorrow, I’m hoping to tackle the stuff at the headboard of my bed, and on the table at the foot of my bed.  I also want to clear the floor of random crap and vacuum (something my carpet hasn’t experienced in months).  And then I want to face down my bookshelves.
