Terrifying motivation for lazy people with messy homes

So after about 5 hours worth of what probably work out to 45/15s (we went by task and then took breaks), my mom and I have unfucked my sewing room.

I posted previously that I had decided to pull out the big guns for this project. My mom is an amazingly organized woman (seriously, I think she might know where every single last thing is in her house, except that my dad likes to move things and has his own idea of where they go) who manages to be chill and unintimidating about it. About two months ago, I decided that the sewing room needed to be unfucked and also rearranged and also needed several organizational systems. At first, I felt a bit weird asking my mom to come help, because aren’t I an adult? But then I thought of it like this: I am bringing in a consultant. She just so happens to be my mom. And also I don’t have to pay her cash money dollars.

We did pull everything out of the room to really clean it, and purged while putting stuff back in. Not everything is done (there are a few boxes of old paperwork that I need to go through on my own), but the room is going to be SO MUCH easier to use.

Overall, I spent about $130 on materials, including (but not limited to): New lamp, shelving in the closet, clear plastic shoeboxes, a garbage can, a tool bucket, extra shelves to put in the bookshelf, and a few other odds and ends.

So, without further ado, here are the before/afters:

This is after I’d already done a few 20/10s in the weeks leading up to this project.

The closet was one big Invisible Corner. There was so much stuff shoved in there, because it was a place that I could hide things. We ultimately took the doors off because it is SO MUCH EASIER to access the closet that way.

Afters:

You can see one of the closet doors leaning against the wall. That one has the ironing board, and the other one we put some over-the-door hangers on so that I can hang up works in progress. I am particularly proud of the hanging-up rulers. When I was doing my pre-cleaning stuff, I was concerned about storing them, and then noticed that everything had a hole to be hung on a hook.

I have a closet! On the right is room to hang up costume stuff! And I have a bookshelf where I can see everything and if I take something off of it, I don’t have to worry about other stuff falling on me!

I am super excited. For the year-and-three-months that I’ve had this apartment, I’ve done a few sewing projects, but this has mostly been a catch-all room for extra crap. I am SO GLAD that my mom was willing and able to come to town to help with this project. We even came up with plans for storage of the stuff that’s currently in cardboard boxes, so that I can almost completely eliminate them (we might hate cardboard boxes. I think it is genetic. The only ones left will be the long-term storage at the top of the closet.)

So… yaaaaay!
