“Mom, guess what the most useless thing was I found on my comb through my bookshelves was?”

I showed her the blank, never used 2008 day planner. We laughed.

“What was I even doing in 2008?”

I couldn’t remember if it was school, or a year I took off to work.

“I don’t know,” she said, “And now we never will. If you’d written in this, maybe we’d know.”

There was an amused pause in conversation.

“Does this mean you haven’t cleaned your room since 2008?”

If one means deep cleaning, bookshelves and all, it’s been longer. For a moment, I felt very small and defensive. But I thought to myself, no, mom, you don’t understand. UfYH is a no shame allowed zone. It was like having a forcefield only I could see against shaming (in a nice shade of sparkly aquamarine). It was fabulous. I just felt like sharing.
