think i sent this as a fanmail by mistake - soz! helping a relative who loathes housework and having some trouble - any tips for restoring a grubby cream leather sofa to it's former glory (esp parts where the grain has worn down???) also a heavily stained cream thick-pile carpet? really want them to see the joys of unfucking. thank you!

For the sofa: saddle soap to clean, and leather restoring cream to bring it back to life a little. Both are pretty widely available.

For the carpet, rent a steam cleaner. As the carpet is drying, place clean rags over the heavily stained areas and put a little pressure on them (some kind of weight). The stain will likely wick its way back up the carpet fiber as it dries. Repeat the process. It may take a few times.

And honestly, cream-colored carpet should be banned. Who thought that was a good idea, ever?

hello, silly question alert: when using the mighty vinegar to wipe surfaces etc do you then have to 'rinse' it off afterwards or just leave to dry as is? thank you p.s. excellent excellent site thank you very much! xxx

I usually do a hot water wipedown afterwards, but it’s not totally necessary for everything (like sinks and showers and stuff). It does help cut down on the time that your house smells like pickles.

help!!! my once-cream thick pile rug is now a horrible sludgy colour and covered in strange grey spots which are impossible to shift. how do i restore it to its former glory?

Your use of the letter ‘u’ in “colour” leads me to deduce that you aren’t in the U.S., so I don’t know if you can rent steamers at the grocery store like you can here, but a professional-type steamer is probably your best option.
